Why We Need You...
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a life altering disease, affecting millions in the United States. Many of those affected live right here in the greater Birmingham area and may be in your family or neighborhood. The stark reality is that there is no cure for MS. The disease is most commonly known to occur in people between the ages of 20 through 50, causing them to face a lifetime filled with unpredictability, instability and lack of mobility. The founder of MS Face2Face was personally affected by MS in 2010. This debilitating disease made her more determined to not only beat the odds, but to devote her life to help other’s to never experience MS Poverty.

 

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease affecting an estimated 4,100 people in Alabama and 2.3 million in the country. MS is often diagnosed in women between 20-50 years of age, but can happen to anyone at any time. MS is an autoimmune disease causing “plaques” in the spinal cord, brain, and optic nerve. The most common symptoms are: fatigue, blurred vision, numbness, loss of balance, and cognitive impairments. MS ranks second only to congestive heart failure in terms of costliness compared with other chronic conditions.

 

 

Disease management costs individuals on average $70,000 per year in health-care cost alone. Over a lifetime, medical expenses, caregiving expenses, and lost wages can add up to nearly $3 million for a person with MS and their families. The high demands of disease management is changing the economic abilities of everyone diagnosed on a large population perimeter. This continuous rise will have a major impact on the economic growth of the City of Birmingham and surrounding areas.
